You Are Not Alone

A Domestic Violence Awareness Month Special

One in four women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. If you are reading this, there is a good chance you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence. You are not alone.

Domestic violence does not discriminate. It does not care about your age, race, gender, religion, or economic status. If you are being abused, know that it is not your fault and there is help available.

Signs of Abuse

The first step to getting help is recognizing that you are being abused. Unfortunately, abuse is often subtle and insidious. It can be difficult to see the signs when you are in the middle of an abusive relationship. Here are some common signs of abuse:

  • Your partner constantly puts you down, calls you names or criticizes you

  • Your partner controls what you do, who you see, or where you go

  • Your partner threatens or hurts you physically

  • Your partner prevents you from seeing your friends or family

  • Your partner controls all the finances in the relationship

  • Your partner threatens to hurt themselves if you leave them

  • Your partner has hurt your pets as a way to control or threaten you

  • You are afraid of your partner most of the time

If any of these sound familiar, please reach out for help. No one deserves to be treated this way. Resources are available to help you get out of an abusive situation and start living a life free from fear.

Getting Help

If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

For confidential support 24/7, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or chat online at Abuse is never your fault. You deserve to be safe and happy. Please reach out for help if you need it.
